Elder Stephen Robertson

Elder Stephen Lemar Robertson, currently studying at Masters of Divinity at Fuller Theological Seminary.  Youth is the time of life when one is young, but often means the time between childhood and adulthood (maturity). It is also defined as "the appearance, freshness, vigor, spirit, etc., characteristic of one who is young". Its definitions of a specific age range varies, as youth is not defined chronologically as a stage that can be tied to specific age ranges; nor can its end point be linked to specific activities, such as taking unpaid work or having sexual relations. An individual's actual maturity may not correspond to their chronological age, as immature individuals can exist at all ages. Youth is an experience that may shape an individual's level of dependency, which can be marked in various ways according to different cultural perspectives. Personal experience is marked by an individual's cultural norms or traditions, while a youth's level of dependency means the extent to which they still rely on their family emotionally and economically. The years from 18 to 25 are a time of stunning accomplishments and chilling risks, as a roller coaster of internal and external changes, including brain changes, propels young adults from adolescence toward full maturity. Yet we are only beginning to understand how and why this all happens—and sometimes doesn’t.  Angeles Mesa Presbyterian Church for young adults have much to offer young adults in general and African-American young adults in particular. They can help black youth find a place to stand emotionally and psychologically. They can help black young people develop a sense of kinship with their black forebears, letting them know that they do not stand alone. African-American biographies can enable black youth to recognize that being black does not have to mean defeat, but can also mean triumph and achievement. And they can allow the black young adult access to all the many black people who have gone through struggles and overcome adversity. African-American young adult biography can especially provide for the black youth the opportunity to become deeply involved in the lives of other black people.
